Every lens starts with light.
Essilor lenses are built from decades of vision science — reshaping how light travels to your eye so the world in front of you simply comes into focus.
We don't think of a lens as a piece of glass. We think of it as a decision light makes on its way to your eye.
Every Essilor lens is designed around that decision — its curve, thickness, and coating calculated until the light reaching your retina lands exactly where it should.
Five ways we shape light
Each lens line solves a specific problem in how light reaches your eye — from focal distance to glare to how a lens ages with wear.
Varilux
The lens that made bifocal lines obsolete. Varilux blends near, intermediate, and far vision into one continuous field, so your eyes move through distances instead of switching between them.
Eyezen
Built for a day spent looking at close range. Eyezen reduces the focusing effort your eyes make on screens and filters a portion of blue-violet light, easing strain from phones, laptops, and everything in between.
Crizal
Uncoated glass reflects a meaningful share of the light that hits it. Crizal's anti-reflective coating reduces that to a fraction of a percent, while also resisting smudges, dust, and scratches — so the lens stays closer to invisible.
Transitions
One lens that responds to UV light — darkening within seconds outdoors, fading back to clear indoors. It adjusts continuously to the light around you, rather than switching between two fixed states.
Stellest
Combines full vision correction with a surrounding pattern of lenslets, shown in clinical studies to meaningfully slow the progression of myopia in children when worn full-time.

A short history of paying attention to light
Société des Lunetiers founded in France — the root of what becomes Essilor.
Varilux launches as the world's first progressive lens, replacing the visible bifocal line.
Essel and Silor merge to form Essilor, unifying decades of separate lens research.
Essilor and Luxottica merge, joining lens science with frame design under one roof.
Essilor lenses are worn by hundreds of millions of people, in nearly every country.
Before you decide
Varilux lenses are calculated using a wider dataset of how eyes actually move through a lens, which typically means a broader field of vision at each distance and a shorter adjustment period than a generic progressive design.
All coatings degrade gradually with wear, but Crizal is built with scratch- and smudge-resistant layers specifically to slow that process. Most wearers see years of use before any noticeable decline.
Windshields block most UV light, so activation is reduced while driving compared to full outdoor sun. Transitions still responds to visible light to some degree, but for consistent driving performance, DriveSafe-style coatings or dedicated sun lenses are worth discussing separately.
Stellest is generally introduced once a child is diagnosed with myopia and able to wear glasses consistently, often between ages 6 and 16. An eye exam will confirm whether it's appropriate for your child's specific case.
In most cases, yes — including frames you already own — provided the shape and size suit your prescription. Our opticians will confirm fit before any lens is cut.
